OUTER CAPE PORTRAIT
Small towns flank the outer reaches of Cape Cod. Here, in the narrow lands between the Atlantic and Cape Cod Bay, you find people who are deeply attached to their work, family, neighbors, and community.
I think of this series of black & white images and recordings as one emerging portrait.
I create a studio, either outdoors at my Wellfleet cottage, or on location. I choose simple backgrounds and generally favor soft, directional lighting.
Besides looking at the images, I want people to hear the voices of their neighbors, each one saying something curious, authentic, or personal.
I first came to summer camp on the Cape as a 13-year-old, infatuated with sailing. I have been here part-time for more than 50 years.
I’ve photographed and made short documentary films about this extraordinary place.
